Books

Game Night is my first novel, a tale of six roleplaying gods and their hopelessly dysfunctional game.

The Slayers Guide To Games Masters: This guide - a very tongue-in-cheek guide that tells players everything they need to know to make their games masters life a misery - was a parody of Mongoose Publishing's popular Slayers Guide line.

Magazine Articles

VALKYRIE 22

Would You Let An Orc Babysit Your Baby?: Each issue of Valkyrie had a particular theme, and this issue's theme was aliens and other races. I discussed how a setting - either fantasy or science fiction - would be altered by having non-human sentient races that differed fundamentally from human beings in biology, intelligence and levels of agression. This article was later republished in electronic format here.

VALKYRIE 23

The theme for this issue was "conspiracies", and my article discussed the difficulties I'd had in the past when attempting to get to grips when roleplaying this genre. This article was later republished in electronic format here.

VALKYRIE 24

The theme for this issue was "history", and my article discussed (with examples from my own, not entirely successful, roleplaying past) what we might mean by "history" when discussed in the context of a roleplaying game. This article was later republished in electronic format here.

VALKYRIE 25

The theme for this issue was "crime and crime fighting", and my untitled article discussed how my first ever roleplaying experience went horribly wrong when my character was accused of a very serious crime. This article was later republished in electronic format here.

VALKYRIE 26

This issue had no theme, so I wrote an article teling the story of how I spent rather more than I'd planned at the Warpcon charity auction. This article was later republished in electronic format here.

What James N. Frey Thinks About Roleplaying: In which I take some of the advice given in a very good book I got about novel writing, and - since many people describe roleplaying as "a group of people interactively writing a novel" - see how typical roleplaying sessions match up. (Hint:- It ain't good).

Alas Poor Edas, We Knew Him: In which I relate the outcome of mixing a small enclosed tower, a psychotic magic item, and an inappropriate out-of-character joke.
